Recommended Websites How to Know if You Need a New Tire The first thing to look at is tread depth. A penny is an excellent tool for this. Turn Abraham Lincoln upside down, and stick the penny into the tread groove. If you can see the top of Abe's head, the tire doesn't have enough tread to be safe (or legal, for that matter). Of course, auto supplies stores have tread depth gauges that are inexpensive and easy to use. In most modern tires you'll see little raised lumps in the bottom of the tread grooves. These are often associated with a TWI marking on the shoulder (where the tread meets the sidewall). These are molded in the rubber and are exactly 1.6mm high (the legal minimum in most European countries). If the main surface of the tire is still above the TWI marks across the full width of the tread, then you are probably legal, but if the TWI indicators are level with the rubber surface, even on only part of the tread, then it's time to buy a new tire.
